Scaling and Root Planing – DFW Metroplex

Deep cleaning therapy to remove built-up plaque and tartar below the gumline and help your gums heal.

Scaling and root planing is the most common non-surgical treatment for gum disease, and it's often the first step toward getting your gum health back on track. The process involves two steps: scaling, in which your dentist carefully removes plaque and tartar from beneath and along the gumline using specialized dental tools, and root planing, which smooths out the roots of the teeth so that the gums can reattach more easily and heal properly. At Bear Creek Family Dentistry, our team performs scaling and root planing in our comfortable DFW Metroplex offices as part of our comprehensive gum disease therapy program.

Scaling and root planing involves carefully removing built-up plaque and tartar that becomes trapped under the gums, in places where a toothbrush cannot reach.

The treatment halts progression of advanced gum disease caused by hidden harmful bacteria and helps prevent future infection.

Performed over the course of two appointments depending on severity of the case.

Mouth is adequately numbed before the procedure begins.

Once bacteria are removed, roots of the teeth are smoothed so surrounding gum tissue can begin healing and reattaching itself.

Smoothing the roots makes it more difficult for bacteria to become trapped again in the future.

Symptoms indicating need for scaling and root planing include bleeding when brushing or flossing, swollen or puffy gums, receding gums, persistent bad breath, constant foul taste, shifting teeth, difficulty biting and chewing, and visible plaque buildup.
